Summary:

When the Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack fired USDA employee Shirley Sherrod after a conservative activist released video footage he'd selectively edited to make a decades-old speech sound racially insensitive to a white farmer, the decision was endorsed by the Department and supported by the White House -- which quickly backtracked when the complete speech became available.

Notes:

CNN used FOIA to obtain email showing some ambivalence among USDA officials, as well as relief from some White House staff, that the Department had acted quickly to quell the controversy -- only to find itself further flummoxed as the story developed.
