Summary:

The Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Ontario has become less safe, a previously-secret report concluded. The Detroit News reported that Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.) used FOIA to obtain a copy of a report on the safety of the structure.

Notes:

Dingell acquired a copy of the report from the Federal Highway Administration (FHA), as it had been compiled for the private company that owns the bridge and submitted to a state agency on the explicit condition it be kept "confidential." But the Michigan Department of Transportation had also agreed to provide a copy of the report to the FHA, which was not bound by the agreement, and the agency subsequently found no reason not to release the report under FOIA.
