"Safe" Pesticides Now First in Poisonings
Center for Public Integrity
The Center's investigation produced a report (Perils of the New Pesticides, http://www.publicintegrity.org/investigations/pesticides/pages/introduction/) summarizing findings from internal EPA data. The report found a 300% increase over the last decade in the number of reported human health problems linked to a type of pesticide (pyrethrins, and their synthetic relatives, pyrethroids), initially developed to replace organophosphates.
Using FOIA, the Center for Public Integrity obtained information from the EPA to discover public health risks from chemicals developed as safer alternatives to organophosphates.
